  • On July 22 1954 Governor Gordon Persons imposed limited martial law on Russell County, Alabama, after Phenix City’s police and sheriff were linked to illegal gambling, political corruption and the murder of attorney-general candidate Albert Patterson. The proclamation suspended local law enforcement, transferring authority to the Alabama National Guard.
