Urgent Call for Safe Battery Disposal
The National Waste & Recycling Foundation (NWRF), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service, has initiated a public service announcement (PSA) campaign aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of improper lithium-ion battery disposal. The campaign features Woodsy Owl, a long-standing conservation mascot, who emphasizes the message: "Skip the Bin—Turn Your Batteries In!" This initiative seeks to educate the public about the fire hazards posed by improperly discarded batteries, which can overheat, explode, and ignite fires, endangering sanitation workers and communities.

Similarly, a fire at Recology's facility in San Francisco was attributed to improper battery disposal, further emphasizing the need for public education on battery recycling.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have developed a low-cost, low-waste method to recover lithium from lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are increasingly used in electric vehicles (EVs).
