Hawaii has recently witnessed the opening of two significant affordable housing developments aimed at addressing the pressing need for low-income housing. The Naulu Apartments in Halawa and Hale Ulu Lehua in Honoka‘a are both designed to provide affordable living options for residents with limited financial means.
The Naulu Apartments, a 25-story building overlooking Pearl Harbor, features 302 units ranging from studios to four-bedroom apartments. This development, which took two years to complete, is reserved for households earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income. Rents will range from $704 for a studio to $2,404 for a four-bedroom unit, remaining affordable for at least 61 years due to government financing conditions. In Honoka‘a, the Hale Ulu Lehua project has transformed a former convent into a supportive housing facility for kupuna (elders). This project includes 10 single-occupancy rental units and aims to provide not only housing but also essential wraparound services to help residents live independently. The facility features renovated units, communal kitchens, and accessibility improvements.
