European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald has announced his final six captain's picks for the 2025 Ryder Cup, completing a roster that features 11 of the 12 players who triumphed over the United States in Rome two years ago. The team, which will compete from September 26-28 at Bethpage Black in New York, includes automatic qualifiers Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Højgaard, and Tyrrell Hatton. The only change from the previous lineup is the inclusion of Rasmus Højgaard, who replaces his twin brother Nicolai.
Donald’s captain's picks are Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Åberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick. This selection marks a significant continuity in the team, as it is the fewest changes made since the Ryder Cup was opened to European players in 1979. Historically, Europe has averaged five changes every two years.
Experience and Strategy
Donald emphasized the importance of experience in his selections, stating, “There is a lot of continuity from Rome, which is unusual, but it shows how good these players are.” He acknowledged the challenges of playing away in the U.S., noting that Europe has lost three of the last four away Ryder Cups by significant margins. “I have looked at lots of different angles to prepare us for the challenge ahead,” he added.
Jon Rahm, a two-time major champion and former world No. 1, is expected to play a pivotal role in the team. Despite finishing 24th in the European Ryder Cup points list due to limited participation in DP World Tour events, his inclusion was deemed essential. Donald remarked, “Jon really sets the standard for us. He understands the history of the Ryder Cup and what it represents.”
Criticism and Opposition
While Donald's selections were largely expected, they were not without controversy. Matt Wallace, who finished 12th in the points standings and recently expressed his emotional desire to participate, was notably left out. Wallace broke down in tears after narrowly missing out on a spot, stating, “I’ll never give up on the Ryder Cup.” Other players, such as Marco Penge and Harry Hall, also missed out despite strong performances throughout the season.
Pablo Larrazabal, a veteran of the DP World Tour, criticized the selection process, arguing that players who compete regularly on the European Tour should have been considered. He stated, “Marco Penge deserved a pick and Wallace deserved a pick, but only 12 men play.” However, Donald's focus on proven performers and team chemistry suggests a strategic approach aimed at maximizing the team’s chances in a challenging environment.

The European team will face a formidable U.S. squad, which includes notable players such as Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, and Xander Schauffele. The Americans have not lost a Ryder Cup on home soil since the “Miracle at Medinah” in 2012, and they will be eager to reclaim the trophy after their defeat in Rome.
As the Ryder Cup approaches, Donald has indicated that while the team is familiar, the strategies and pairings may differ from those used in 2023. “Just because we have a very similar team doesn’t mean we are going to roll out the same pairings or the same line-up,” he stated.
