Camtel's Nationwide Fiber and Fixed Telephony Expansion
Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel) has initiated a nationwide campaign to enhance fixed line services and expand fiber-optic connectivity across the country. Announced on August 30, 2025, during the Camtel Actu radio program, the initiative aims to provide reliable communication in a predominantly mobile market. The campaign includes promotions for wired phones priced between 5,000 and 15,000 francs CFA, which feature caller ID and other enhancements. Camtel is also developing its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network, targeting 230,000 fiber ports by year-end, up from over 180,000 currently deployed. This expansion is part of Camtel's broader strategy to improve connectivity, including the rollout of 4G and LTE networks in over 160 municipalities and preparations for 5G deployment.
PLDT's Google Taara Laser Communication Initiative
In the Philippines, PLDT Inc. is set to activate three Google Taara laser communication sites, which will provide fiber-like internet connectivity without the need for physical cables. The installations are located on Talim Island, Dipaluda, and Bagong Pagasa, with each site capable of delivering up to 20 gigabits per second. This technology is designed to overcome the logistical challenges of laying fiber in remote areas, such as crossing rivers and rugged terrains. PLDT's Chief Operating Officer, Butch Jimenez, emphasized that this initiative is a "game-changer" for connecting underserved regions, enhancing digital inclusion across the country.
