UCF Launches RenewU Program to Combat Healthcare Provider Burnout

9/3/2025, 2:02:42 PM

Addressing Healthcare Burnout

Burnout among healthcare providers has reached critical levels, with a 2022 report from the Centers for Disease Control indicating that 46% of health workers frequently experience burnout, an increase from 38% in 2018. In response to this growing issue, faculty members from the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Academic Health Sciences Center (AHSC) developed the RenewU program. This initiative offers a free virtual toolkit aimed at enhancing resilience and well-being among healthcare professionals, students, clinics, and hospitals. The program was funded by a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

Features of the RenewU Toolkit

The RenewU program comprises ten evidence-based interventions designed to mitigate burnout and foster resilience in high-pressure healthcare environments. The toolkit is structured into mental and physical wellness sections, providing resources in both medical and lay terms. It includes active self-directed learning, practice activities, and opportunities for group interaction and reflection. Licensed healthcare providers can also earn continuing education credits through the training.

Key mental health topics addressed in the toolkit include stress management, mindfulness, and setting boundaries, while the physical health section promotes active rest and healthy eating. Asli Yalim, an associate professor at UCF, emphasized that the selected interventions are tailored specifically for the unpredictable nature of healthcare work, offering practical strategies rather than generic advice.

Implementation and Reach

The program has already seen participation from various healthcare professionals, including emergency medicine residents at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital, who engaged in yoga sessions to evaluate the program's effectiveness. Additionally, the toolkit has reached 2,500 users, including international healthcare workers from countries such as Canada, Ireland, Sweden, and Germany. UCF's efforts have garnered recognition, including the National Award for Institutional Excellence and Innovation in Interprofessional Education from the Association of Schools Advancing Health.

Official Statements & Responses

Magdelena Pasarica, assistant dean for medical education at UCF, stated, “Burnout has emerged as a growing epidemic among healthcare providers. They need to manage the inherent stress of the profession through healthy behaviors.” Laurie Neely, an associate professor of physical therapy at UCF, added, “Promoting health and wellness among healthcare professionals allows us to better care for our patients.”

Criticism & Opposition

While the RenewU program has received positive feedback, some critics argue that the toolkit may not address the systemic issues contributing to burnout, such as staffing shortages and high patient loads. They emphasize the need for healthcare systems to implement broader organizational changes to create a supportive work environment.
