Announcement of New Electric Vehicle Production
On September 3, 2025, Toyota Motor Corporation announced plans to manufacture its first fully-electric vehicle at its plant in Kolin, Czech Republic. This initiative marks a significant step in Toyota's electrification strategy in Europe. The company will invest approximately €680 million ($796 million) to expand its manufacturing capabilities, which includes the establishment of a dedicated battery assembly facility. The Czech government will contribute up to €64 million to support this development.
Details of the Expansion
The expansion will increase the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) facility from approximately 152,000 square meters to about 173,000 square meters. This upgrade will accommodate the production of the new electric vehicle (EV) as well as enhancements to the existing paint and welding shops. Currently, the Kolin plant produces the Aygo X and Yaris Hybrid models, with an annual capacity of around 220,000 vehicles.
Economic Impact and Government Support
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala emphasized the importance of this investment, noting that the automotive industry constitutes about 10% of the country's GDP. He stated that securing such a significant foreign investor as Toyota is crucial for maintaining the Czech Republic's status as a car-manufacturing hub. The investment is expected to create approximately 245 new jobs in the Central Bohemia region.
Toyota's Strategic Shift
Historically, Toyota has adopted a cautious approach to fully electric vehicles compared to its competitors. However, the company has recently announced plans to launch nine fully-electric models in Europe by 2025 and 2026 under its Toyota and Lexus brands. This shift aligns with Toyota's objective of achieving carbon-neutral operations in Europe by 2040. The decision to expand production in Kolin is part of a broader strategy to modernize and enhance the technological capabilities of the Czech automotive sector.
Official Statements
Yoshihiro Nakata, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, remarked, “This new battery electric vehicle production is testament to the dedication of our employees and the vision shared with the Czech government to advance sustainable mobility and innovation.” He further acknowledged the historical support from the Czech Republic and expressed commitment to contributing positively to Czech society.
Criticism and Opposition
Despite the positive reception of the announcement, some critics have pointed out that Toyota's late entry into the fully electric vehicle market may hinder its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape. The company has been perceived as lagging behind rivals who have aggressively pursued electric vehicle technology.
What's Next
While a specific start date for the production of the new electric vehicle has not been confirmed, the expansion of the Kolin plant is expected to play a pivotal role in Toyota's future operations in Europe. The company aims to leverage this investment to enhance its market presence and contribute to the ongoing transition toward sustainable transportation solutions.
