India has experienced a significant surge in clean electricity production, with a reported 20% increase in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This growth has enabled utilities to reduce fossil fuel-fired generation by 4%, with clean energy sources projected to provide a record one-third of the country's utility electricity in the coming months. Data from Ember indicates that India's utilities generated approximately 236 terawatt hours (TWh) of clean electricity, driven by a 29% increase in wind generation and a 25% rise in solar output. As a result, clean power is expected to exceed 30% of India's generation mix for the months of July, August, and September 2025.

Government Initiatives and Tax Reforms

In a bid to further bolster the renewable energy sector, the Indian government has reduced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on renewable energy components from 12% to 5%. This tax cut applies to solar cells, windmill equipment, biogas plants, and other renewable energy devices, aiming to make clean energy solutions more affordable and stimulate project development. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi emphasized that this reduction will enhance the economic viability of renewable projects and support India's long-term target of achieving 500 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2030.

Industry Response and Future Prospects

Industry leaders have welcomed the GST reduction, viewing it as a critical step toward accelerating India's clean energy transition. Gautam Mohanka, Director of Gautam Solar, stated that the tax cut would significantly increase the accessibility of solar installations for households and businesses. Similarly, Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, highlighted the transformative potential of this reform in enhancing renewable energy capacity and adoption.

As of September 2025, India has added 30 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity, with expectations to reach between 39 GW and 43 GW by the end of the year. The government is also addressing delays in power sale agreements (PSAs) and enhancing weather forecasting to improve efficiency in renewable energy generation.

Challenges and Criticism

Despite the positive developments, challenges remain. A significant portion of India's renewable energy capacity, approximately 44 GW, is currently stranded due to a lack of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). This "green energy paradox" highlights systemic barriers that hinder the absorption of renewable energy into the grid. Critics argue that while supply capacity is expanding, demand-side absorption and financial viability lag behind, necessitating targeted reforms to ensure effective integration of renewable sources.
