Banbury Woman Jailed for Defrauding Elderly Couple of Over £900,000

Susan Bruland, a 57-year-old woman from Banbury, has been sentenced to five years in prison for defrauding an elderly couple, Janet and Michael Rumke, out of more than £901,000. Bruland, who was a family friend and held power of attorney for the couple, abused her position by transferring funds from their bank accounts for her personal use. The sentencing took place at Oxford Crown Court on August 29, 2024, after Bruland pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud by abuse of position.

The fraudulent activities began in July 2022 and continued until October 2023. Bruland initiated large transfers from the couple's joint account, which was nearly depleted by December 2022. She opened multiple bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets, investing approximately £150,000 in cryptocurrency. Between April and June 2023, she continued to siphon off tens of thousands of pounds, ultimately leading to her arrest in January 2024. Detective Inspector Duncan Wynn of Thames Valley Police stated that Bruland demonstrated a "complete disregard for the position of trust" she held and neglected the couple's care needs, leaving a care home owed a substantial sum.
