Jim Gavin, the former manager of the Dublin Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) team, has been chosen as Fianna Fáil's candidate for the upcoming presidential election in Ireland, defeating MEP Billy Kelleher by a vote of 41 to 29. The selection took place during a secret ballot among the party's parliamentary members at Leinster House. This marks the first time Fianna Fáil has nominated a candidate for the presidency since Mary McAleese in 1997.

Gavin, 54, is best known for his successful tenure as the Dublin GAA manager from 2012 to 2019, during which he led the team to six All-Ireland titles. Raised in Clondalkin, Dublin, he has a background in the Irish Defence Forces, where he served as a pilot and participated in overseas missions, including in Chad. Currently, he is the chief operations officer of the Irish Aviation Authority and has been involved in various public service initiatives, including chairing a Citizens’ Assembly on a directly elected mayor for Dublin.

Kelleher's significant support indicates a level of dissent among party members regarding the selection process. Some members expressed concerns about the decision to nominate an outsider, suggesting that it may have undermined party unity. Kelleher himself noted the importance of having a robust debate within the party, stating, “I don’t see votes in political parties as divisive. I actually see them as the bulwark of democracy.”
