Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, made his racing debut at the Nürburgring Nordschleife during the seventh round of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) on September 16, 2023. Competing in a detuned Porsche 718 Cayman GT4, Verstappen aimed to obtain the DMSB Permit A, which is necessary to race in top-level GT3 cars, including the prestigious Nürburgring 24 Hours.

Verstappen's weekend began with a successful qualifying session, where he secured sixth place in the Cup 3 class with a best lap time of 10:21.591, significantly faster than his competitors. Despite the car's power being restricted to approximately 300 horsepower—down from its usual 425 horsepower—he managed to complete the required 14 incident-free laps during the race. However, due to damage sustained by his second car, the #89 Cayman, during qualifying, he could not fulfill the requirement of being classified in two different cars.

Despite this setback, the DMSB committee reviewed his case and granted him the Permit A, allowing him to compete in GT3 machinery in future events. “I’m happy that everything went smoothly and that I obtained the DMSB Permit Nordschleife,” Verstappen stated after the race. He expressed excitement about the challenges of the Nordschleife, describing it as a unique track with varying conditions.

Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher criticized the decision to require Verstappen to go through the same licensing process as amateur drivers, calling it "embarrassing."
