WANwear Clothing Line Launches in Owensboro

Owensboro’s Western Academy has introduced a new clothing brand, WANwear, aimed at teaching young men essential skills in leadership, entrepreneurship, and marketing. The initiative, spearheaded by Academy Director Olga McKissic, was developed to engage older students and provide them with real-world learning experiences. McKissic emphasized the importance of preparing young men to become leaders and entrepreneurs, stating, “If we’re not teaching each other, then who’s teaching us?”

The concept for WANwear emerged from McKissic's previous work in Louisville, where she implemented financial literacy and entrepreneurship camps. Students at Western Academy will participate in designing and marketing T-shirts, learning not only the creative aspects but also sales strategies. The clothing line features designs that promote empowerment and cultural pride, with one shirt stating, “You are becoming someone’s history,” reflecting the significance of Black history. WANwear's collections will be released seasonally, and the project aims to provide a sustainable revenue stream for the Academy.

The initiative also incorporates e-commerce and digital marketing, with shirts sold through a Shopify-integrated website. Students are gaining insights into social media strategy and audience targeting. WANwear collaborates with Owensboro High School’s Red and Black Shack, marking a unique partnership for the student-run store. McKissic noted the initiative has energized students, who are excited about the educational and entrepreneurial opportunities it presents.

Youth Empowerment Through Skill Development in Rajshahi

In Rajshahi, Bangladesh, the Department of Youth Development (DYD) has successfully empowered hundreds of youths through skill development training and financial support. Notable success stories include Ripa Khatun, who transformed her life after completing a three-month training course in 2018, leading to the establishment of her boutique business. With an initial investment and subsequent loans, Khatun's capital has grown significantly, showcasing the potential of entrepreneurship.

The DYD trained 5,726 youths in various trades, providing loans totaling Tk 3.74 crore to 729 individuals. The training programs focus on diverse skills, including tailoring, poultry farming, and computer skills, aimed at fostering self-reliance among young men and women. Golam Mahabub, Deputy Director of DYD, highlighted the importance of these initiatives in combating social issues such as child marriage and drug addiction, while also promoting environmental protection through tree planting.

Nigerian Youth Entrepreneurship Initiatives

In Nigeria, the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, reported that over 70% of youths in the state are engaged in entrepreneurship. This statistic underscores the necessity for fiscal and structural support to help these young entrepreneurs scale their businesses. The state government is committed to empowering youth through initiatives like the amplifier business clinic, which provides mentorship and access to grants.

Additionally, the federal government’s Youth Economic Intervention and De-Radicalisation Programme (YEIDEP) aims to tackle youth unemployment and economic marginalization. Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, emphasized the program's role in creating jobs for millions of youths through entrepreneurship.

Digital Transformation for Youth in Saint Lucia

TPIsoftware has partnered with the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and the Youth Economy Agency (YEA) in Saint Lucia to launch an e-commerce platform designed to support youth and women entrepreneurs. This initiative aims to enhance the digital presence of micro, small, and medium enterprises, facilitating their competitiveness in the local market. The platform will provide essential training and consultancy to aspiring entrepreneurs, fostering an environment conducive to business growth.

These initiatives across Owensboro, Rajshahi, Nigeria, and Saint Lucia illustrate a global commitment to empowering youth through entrepreneurship.
