The research identified 24 species of bacteria and fungi that either increased or decreased the risk of pancreatic cancer. Notably, three oral bacterial pathogens—Porphyromonas gingivalis, Eubacterium nodatum, and Parvimonas micra—were associated with heightened risk, while the yeast Candida was also found in pancreatic tumor samples, suggesting a potential link between oral health and cancer development. The overall microbial profile significantly increased the likelihood of developing pancreatic cancer by more than threefold.

The findings underscore the importance of oral health in cancer prevention. Co-senior author Jiyoung Ahn, PhD, emphasized that profiling the oral microbiome could help oncologists identify individuals who may benefit from early pancreatic cancer screening. Richard Hayes, DDS, PhD, another co-senior author, noted that maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing, may not only prevent periodontal disease but also reduce cancer risk.
