"Dexter: Original Sin" followed a young Dexter Morgan, portrayed by Patrick Gibson, as he navigated his early life as a forensic analyst and budding serial killer. The series premiered on December 13, 2024, and garnered 2.1 million global viewers within its first three days. Despite its initial success, the show faced a sudden halt in production plans after the merger of Paramount and Skydance, which led to a shift in focus towards the sequel series "Dexter: Resurrection."

Phillips had ambitious plans for the "Dexter" franchise, including the introduction of younger versions of characters such as James Doakes and Captain Matthews, as well as a deeper exploration of Dexter's relationship with his biological brother, Brian. He noted that he had completed ten scripts for a potential spinoff centered on the Trinity Killer, a character originally portrayed by John Lithgow. However, with the cancellation of "Original Sin," Phillips expressed skepticism about the future of the Trinity spinoff, stating, “If they canceled Original Sin, which is a built-in hit, how are they going to pick up Trinity?”
