Hillsdale College Women Awarded Shooting Scholarships
Three students from Hillsdale College have been awarded the Ladies for Liberty Shooting Scholarship, a half-tuition scholarship designated for female members of the Hillsdale College Shotgun Team. The recipients, Madeline Corbin, Luciana Kern, and Marin McKinney, were recognized for their academic and athletic achievements. Corbin, a biology major from Reedsburg, Wisconsin, recently won gold in women’s skeet at the Junior Championship of the Americas in Barbados. Kern, from Las Vegas, Nevada, is pursuing political economy and recently excelled in women’s trap doubles at a regional championship. McKinney, an art major from Foristell, Missouri, also achieved first place in skeet doubles at a collegiate championship. The Hillsdale College Shotgun Team has a notable history, having won eight national championships and produced numerous All-American athletes.
America 250 Civics Education Coalition Launched
In a separate initiative, Hillsdale College is involved in the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, launched in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education and over 40 organizations, including the America First Policy Institute. Announced on Constitution Day, the coalition aims to enhance civic literacy and patriotism as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026. U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon emphasized the importance of educating citizens about their freedoms, stating, “A country cannot survive if its values are forgotten by its people.” The coalition plans to implement a programming agenda that includes a speaker series, student competitions, and a 50-state speaking tour to engage students and communities nationwide.
Criticism & Opposition
While the coalition aims to promote civic education, there are concerns regarding the involvement of conservative organizations like Hillsdale College and Turning Point USA. Critics argue that such partnerships may lead to a biased interpretation of American history and values. The initiative has faced scrutiny from those who believe it could undermine the educational independence of schools, as the federal government is prohibited from directing school curricula.
Official Statements & Responses
Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn remarked on the significance of the Declaration of Independence, stating, “We’re going to lose our nation if we lose its central idea.” He underscored the urgency of the coalition's mission to celebrate American freedoms. Kelly Shackelford, President & CEO of First Liberty, reiterated the coalition's goal to ensure that future generations understand and cherish the principles upon which the nation was founded.
What's Next
The America 250 Civics Education Coalition is set to unveil its programming agenda over the next 12 months, which will include various initiatives aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of American history and values among students. Meanwhile, Hillsdale College continues to support its students in both academic and athletic pursuits, exemplified by the recent scholarship awards to its shotgun team members.
