Yakuza Series Expands with New Releases and Enhancements

SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have announced the release of several titles in the Yakuza franchise, including Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2. All three games will be available on December 8, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. This announcement follows the earlier release of the Nintendo Switch 2 versions of Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 on November 13, 2025.

Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut is described as the definitive edition of the acclaimed prequel. It introduces new story cutscenes that provide deeper insights into key characters and events. Additionally, it features a new online multiplayer mode called Red Light Raid, allowing players to team up with friends and choose from 60 unlockable characters to battle waves of enemies. The game will run at 4K 60 FPS on the Nintendo Switch 2, while save data from the original Yakuza 0 will not carry over, and there will be no upgrade path for existing owners.

Both Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 will also see significant updates. The remakes will support additional languages for the first time, including French, Italian, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian. A special Yakuza Series 20th Anniversary Bundle will be available, featuring Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2, providing fans with a comprehensive package to revisit the franchise's origins.

Yakuza Kiwami is a full remake of the original 2005 game, following Kazuma Kiryu as he navigates a billion-yen conspiracy in Tokyo. Yakuza Kiwami 2 continues Kiryu's story, showcasing his conflict with Ryuji Goda, the "Dragon of Kansai." Both titles have been praised for their engaging narratives and dynamic combat systems, which utilize the Dragon Engine for enhanced visuals and gameplay.

Some critics have pointed out that the lack of an upgrade path for existing Yakuza 0 players may deter those who have already invested in the original game. The requirement to repurchase the title for new content has raised concerns among the fanbase, particularly regarding the value of the new features compared to the cost.

Following the December 8 release, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is set to launch Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties on February 11, 2026. This new title promises to overhaul the original 2009 game and includes a new side story centered on Yoshitaka Mine, further expanding the Yakuza universe.
