Raul Malo, the lead singer of the country music group The Mavericks, has announced the cancellation of all remaining concerts for 2025 due to a significant progression in his health condition. Malo, who has been battling stage 4 colon cancer since June 2024, revealed on September 24 that he has developed leptomeningeal disease (LMD), a serious condition where cancer cells invade the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. In an Instagram post, Malo described LMD as “get this [expletive] out of my head,” and stated that he would begin radiation treatment the following day, with plans to explore chemotherapy and alternative therapies.

Leptomeningeal disease is considered incurable, and treatment primarily focuses on preventing the cancer from spreading, alleviating symptoms, and maintaining quality of life. According to the Cleveland Clinic, patients with LMD typically have a prognosis of three to six months with treatment, while those who do not receive treatment may live about a month. Despite the grim diagnosis, Malo expressed his determination to continue fighting, stating, “We don’t know what this will look like a couple months from now, but we are going into it like we have with everything else. Full steam ahead. Fight, recover, rest, repeat.”

In his social media update, Malo emphasized the importance of rest and recovery, stating, “It’s time to take your words to heart of resting & recovering, so that’s what I’m going to do.” He also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received from fans, family, and friends, saying, “I am in no way alone, or scared. I have an amazing wife and boys, wonderful family, team, road crew, band, friends and fans.” Malo reassured fans that he plans to continue working on non-touring projects, including live recordings and merchandise.
