Overview of Closures and Layoffs
Starbucks has announced a significant restructuring plan that includes the closure of approximately 200 stores across North America, resulting in the layoff of 900 non-retail employees. This decision follows a review aimed at ensuring that each coffeehouse meets the company's standards for a "warm and welcoming space" and demonstrates a viable path to financial performance. CEO Brian Niccol stated, “We identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed.”
Locations Affected
The closures will impact numerous locations, particularly in major cities such as New York, San Diego, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. In New York City alone, 27 locations are set to close, including several in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Notable closures include the iconic Astor Place location, which ceased operations in July 2024. In Baltimore, six locations have already closed, including popular spots in Canton and Federal Hill. Other cities like Sacramento, Richmond, and various locations in Texas will also see multiple closures.
Official Statements and Responses
Starbucks has emphasized that the closures are part of a broader strategy to revitalize the brand following six consecutive quarters of declining sales. Niccol noted, “This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult.” The company plans to invest $1 billion in this restructuring, which includes $150 million allocated for employee separation benefits.
Criticism and Opposition
The closures have sparked criticism, particularly from Starbucks Workers United, the labor group representing many of the affected employees. The union expressed concerns that the closures were made without input from baristas, stating, “Fixing what’s broken at Starbucks isn’t possible without centering the people who engage with the company’s customers day in and day out.” Additionally, some customers have voiced their disappointment, with one local resident lamenting the loss of their neighborhood Starbucks, stating, “These people have been super nice and they’ve almost become like a part of the family.”
Employee Support and Severance Packages
Starbucks has committed to offering severance packages and support to affected employees, including options for transfers to nearby locations where possible. Niccol stated, “We’re working hard to offer transfers to nearby locations where possible and will move quickly to help partners understand what opportunities might be available to them.” However, many employees have reported receiving short notice regarding their store closures, raising concerns about the adequacy of the support provided.
What's Next for Starbucks
Looking ahead, Starbucks plans to redesign over 1,000 locations to enhance customer experience and aims to increase its store count in the next fiscal year. Despite the current closures, the company expects to end the fiscal year with approximately 18,300 locations across North America, a decrease of 124 from the previous year. The ongoing restructuring reflects Niccol's commitment to revitalizing the brand and addressing the challenges faced by the coffee giant in a competitive market.
