New Studio and First Title Announcement

Tom Stone, the former managing director of TT Games, has officially launched Second Star Games, a new game development and publishing studio based in Manchester, UK. The studio aims to create interactive experiences for young gamers and their families, with its inaugural title being "Neverland: A Peter Pan Adventure." This fantasy-adventure game will explore the enchanting world of Neverland, leveraging the rich legacy of J.M. Barrie's beloved characters.

Licensing Agreement with Great Ormond Street Hospital

Second Star Games has secured a long-term, worldwide, exclusive license from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and its charity arm, GOSH Charity, to develop a suite of video games based on the Peter Pan IP. GOSH holds perpetual rights to adaptations of Peter Pan, a donation made by Barrie in 1929 to support the hospital's charitable efforts. GOSH Charity will receive royalties from all game sales, which will contribute to funding vital services for seriously ill children treated at the hospital.

Team Composition and Funding

Stone has assembled a team of seasoned industry veterans, many of whom previously worked with him at TT Games. The studio currently comprises 18 full-time employees, including lead game designer Andrew Holt and art director Nicola Daly. Grahame “Chily” Chilton, an early investor in the first LEGO Star Wars game, is the lead investor in Second Star Games. Stone has also invested his own funds into the venture.

Vision and Development Philosophy

Stone envisions Second Star Games as a platform for creating high-quality games that foster family engagement. He emphasizes a more balanced work environment compared to his previous experience at TT Games, where the culture was described as intense and demanding. "I think we're going to take a breath and look up occasionally," Stone remarked, reflecting on the need for a healthier work-life balance while still aiming for high standards in game development.

Industry Context and Challenges

The gaming landscape has evolved significantly since Stone's tenure at TT Games, with the rise of platforms like Roblox and Fortnite capturing the attention of younger audiences. Stone acknowledges the challenge of attracting players aged five to thirteen, who are now immersed in these popular games. He aims to create a game that stands out in a crowded market, leveraging the nostalgic appeal of Peter Pan while innovating in gameplay and design.

Official Statements

Jenny Martin, GOSH Charity’s senior brand licensing manager, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to be working with expert partners Second Star Games to bring the magical world of Neverland to life for a generation of young gamers.” She highlighted the importance of the project in supporting the hospital's mission through game sales.

What's Next

As Second Star Games prepares for the development of "Neverland: A Peter Pan Adventure," the studio is also exploring potential partnerships with publishers while remaining open to various intellectual properties in the future. Stone's goal is to build a diverse portfolio that resonates with young gamers and their families, creating memorable experiences that foster community and engagement.
