Matthew Lillard's Involvement in Colon Cancer Awareness
Matthew Lillard, known for his role as Stu Macher in the "Scream" franchise, is collaborating with Exact Sciences to promote the "Screen" campaign aimed at increasing awareness of colon cancer screening. This initiative encourages individuals to get screened starting at age 45, as colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with an estimated 52,900 deaths expected in 2025 according to the American Cancer Society.
Lillard, who has personally experienced the impact of cancer, expressed his commitment to the cause, stating, “I was excited about sort of speaking my truth in moments like this and doing everything I can to bring awareness to colon cancer.” The campaign features humorous segments where Lillard interacts with a delivery person, emphasizing that screening should not be a source of fear.
The Importance of Early Screening
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths among men and fourth among women in the U.S. Lillard highlighted that early detection significantly improves treatability, noting that death rates from colorectal cancer among older adults have decreased due to increased screening. However, rates among individuals under 55 have been rising by approximately 1% annually since the mid-2000s, prompting the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to lower the recommended screening age from 50 to 45.
Lillard emphasized the need to break the stigma surrounding colon cancer screening, stating, “I feel like the more people talk about it, the more it’s addressed.” He noted that many individuals may avoid screening due to embarrassment or lack of awareness.
Screening Methods: Colonoscopy and At-Home Tests
The gold standard for colon cancer detection is a colonoscopy, which allows doctors to examine the colon for abnormalities. While this procedure is highly accurate, it requires preparation that some may find uncomfortable. For those at low risk, at-home screening options like the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and Cologuard are available. Cologuard, developed by Exact Sciences, detects abnormal DNA and blood in stool samples and is less invasive than a colonoscopy, although it is not as accurate.
Lillard has personally used Cologuard, stating, “I’ve gone through the process. I’ve used Cologuard. When I got my result, which was thankfully negative, it gave me peace of mind.” He advocates for these tests as a means to encourage more people to get screened.
Positive Reception and Future Endeavors
The response to Lillard's campaign has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for his efforts to raise awareness about colon cancer. Alongside his advocacy work, Lillard is experiencing a resurgence in his acting career, with upcoming roles in "Scream 7," set to release on February 27, 2026, and "Five Nights at Freddy's 2," premiering in December 2025.
As Lillard continues to balance his advocacy with his acting career, he remains hopeful that his efforts will lead to increased screening rates for colon cancer, ultimately saving lives.
