Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) have achieved a significant milestone in reproductive science by successfully creating human eggs from adult skin cells. The OHSU team successfully produced 82 functional oocytes, which were then fertilized in vitro. However, only about 9% of these fertilized eggs developed to the blastocyst stage, the point at which embryos are typically transferred to the uterus during in vitro fertilization (IVF). Most embryos exhibited chromosomal abnormalities, which could hinder normal development. Dr. Paula Amato, a co-author of the study, emphasized that these embryos would not be expected to result in healthy babies.
