Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners has successfully completed the first stage of its Supernode Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Queensland, Australia, marking a significant milestone in the development of renewable energy infrastructure. The Supernode project, which aims to deliver a total of 780 megawatts (MW) of battery storage capacity across three stages, is strategically located adjacent to Queensland's central electricity transmission network, where approximately 80% of the state's electricity flows daily. The first stage, with a capacity of 260 MW, is now operational and has achieved 'backfeed energisation,' connecting to Powerlink's Southpine substation.

Key Financial Backing and Partnerships

The initial phases of the Supernode project have received substantial financial support, including AU$722 million (US$477 million) in debt financing secured in January 2025. This financing was arranged through a consortium of banks, including Bank of America, Commonwealth Bank, Deutsche Bank, Mizuho Bank, and MUFG Bank. Quinbrook has established long-term offtake agreements with Origin Energy for the first two stages, ensuring a stable revenue stream and facilitating the integration of renewable energy into the grid.

Technological Innovations

The Supernode project will utilize Quinbrook's EnerQB battery energy storage technology, developed in collaboration with CATL. This technology is designed for long-duration energy storage, offering an eight-hour discharge capability that addresses the challenges of intermittent renewable energy generation. Quinbrook plans to deploy approximately 3 gigawatts (GW) of EnerQB technology across Australia, with the Supernode serving as the initial deployment site.

Future Phases and Broader Implications

Upon completion of all three stages, the Supernode project will have a total capacity of 780 MW/3,074 megawatt-hours (MWh), positioning it as one of the largest BESS facilities in Australia. The second stage, currently under construction, will double the energy storage duration capability, enhancing grid services and renewable energy firming capacity for the Queensland electricity market. Quinbrook is also in discussions for a third stage of development, which includes a 1,010 MWh offtake agreement with Stanwell Corporation.

Criticism and Opposition

While the project has garnered significant support, there are concerns regarding the environmental impact of large-scale battery storage systems and the sourcing of materials for battery production. Critics argue that the focus on battery storage should not overshadow the need for comprehensive renewable energy policies that address sustainability and resource management.
