HPV-DeepSeek: A New Frontier in Head and Neck Cancer Detection
Researchers at Mass General Brigham have developed a blood test known as HPV-DeepSeek, which can detect HPV-related head and neck cancers up to ten years before symptoms appear. This advancement is significant as HPV is responsible for approximately 70% of head and neck cancers in the United States, a type of cancer that has seen rising incidence rates. In a study involving 56 samples from the Mass General Brigham Biobank, the test successfully detected HPV tumor DNA in 22 out of 28 patients who later developed cancer, while all control samples tested negative. Another promising blood test, Galleri, has shown the ability to detect over 50 types of cancer, including esophageal cancer, often before symptoms arise. In a study involving more than 111,000 participants, Galleri successfully identified various cancers at early, more treatable stages. Kevin McFarland, a firefighter, credited the Galleri test with saving his life by detecting his esophageal cancer early, allowing for timely surgical intervention without the need for chemotherapy or radiation.
Despite its potential, the Galleri test is not widely accessible due to its high cost of approximately $1,000 and lack of insurance coverage. Medical professionals recommend it primarily for individuals with a family history of cancer or other high-risk factors.
New Zealand's Bowel Screening Initiative
In New Zealand, the government has announced a reduction in the bowel screening age from 60 to 58, aiming to enhance early detection of colorectal cancer. This change is expected to make an additional 122,000 individuals eligible for free screening in the first year, potentially preventing 771 cases of bowel cancer and saving 566 lives over the next 25 years. The initiative includes a non-invasive stool test, known as the Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), designed to identify individuals at higher risk without the need for immediate colonoscopy.
