Mayor's Celebration of Businesses Highlights Community Resilience
On October 3, 2025, the Mayor’s Celebration of Businesses Award Luncheon took place in St. Louis, organized by the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership (STL Partnership) and the St. Louis Development Corporation (SLDC). The event recognized businesses that contributed to the community's recovery following the EF3 tornado that struck on May 16, 2025. St. Louis City Mayor Cara Spencer acknowledged the efforts of various companies and organizations, including the United Way of Greater St. Louis and the American Red Cross-Greater St. Louis Chapter, among others, for their roles in the recovery process.
During the luncheon, Spencer also announced the opening of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency’s new $1.75 billion headquarters in north St. Louis, alongside the return of the SLDC North City grants program and a new non-stop flight between St. Louis and London. Over 20 businesses received awards, including the Good Neighbor award, which was given to Sugarwitch, an ice cream sandwich shop supported by the STL Partnership’s Business Finance division.
Leadership Changes at Greater St. Louis Inc.
In a significant development for the region's economic landscape, Ron Kitchens has been appointed as the new CEO of Greater St. Louis Inc. (GSL). With over three decades of experience in economic development across multiple states, including Missouri, Kitchens expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “St. Louis is near and dear to my heart, and I am excited to play a role in building a prosperous future for this region.” He will officially begin his tenure in early November 2025, succeeding interim CEO Dustin Allison.
Kitchens aims to focus on attracting new investments, job growth, and revitalizing downtown St. Louis, which has been a priority for GSL since its establishment in 2021.
Tornado Relief Efforts by Local Artists
In response to the tornado's aftermath, St. Louis native rapper Smino has partnered with St. Louis CITY SC to launch a merchandise line aimed at supporting tornado relief efforts. The collection features designs that reflect both Smino's artistic style and the pride of the St. Louis community. Proceeds from the sales will benefit the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, reinforcing the club's commitment to community support.
Smino stated, “Fashion has always been a big part of my life, so I’m grateful to be able to collab with CITY SC for a great cause,” emphasizing the importance of giving back to his hometown.
Criticism of Attendance Decline for St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals have experienced a significant decline in attendance during the 2025 season, drawing only 2,250,007 fans, a drop of 628,108 from the previous year. Analysts attribute this decline to the team's performance and lack of star players, which has led to decreased ticket sales and related revenues. The Cardinals' management, now under the leadership of Chaim Bloom, is expected to focus on revitalizing the roster to attract fans back to Busch Memorial Stadium.
Conclusion
These developments reflect a community actively engaging in recovery and growth following recent challenges. From business recognition and leadership changes to grassroots efforts for tornado relief and addressing sports attendance issues, St. Louis is navigating a path toward resilience and revitalization.
