HelloFresh Issues Recall Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

10/8/2025, 3:23:30 AM

Overview of the Recall

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert regarding two ready-to-eat meals from HelloFresh that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products are the Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta and Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey, both produced by FreshRealm, a California-based company. These meals were shipped directly to consumers between September 6 and October 9, 2025.

Details of the Affected Products

The specific products involved in the recall include:

  • Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta: 10.1-ounce containers with establishment numbers "Est. 47718" and lot codes 49107 or "Est. 2937" and lot code 48840.
  • Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey: 10-ounce containers with establishment number "P-47718" and lot codes 50069, 50073, or 50698.

The contamination was identified when FreshRealm notified FSIS that routine testing found listeria in the spinach used in these meals. Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with these specific products, the alert comes amid a broader listeria outbreak linked to other ready-to-eat meals.

Health Risks Associated with Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations, including older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. In pregnant women, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, and severe infections in newborns.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1,250 people in the U.S. are infected with listeria each year, resulting in about 260 deaths.

Official Responses and Recommendations

HelloFresh has stated that they are taking the matter seriously and have directly contacted customers who may have received the affected meals, advising them to discard the products. The company emphasized that the safety of their customers is their highest priority.

The FSIS recommends that consumers who have purchased the affected meals should not consume them and instead either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Additionally, consumers are advised to wash and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated products.

Ongoing Investigation

The FSIS has indicated that the investigation is ongoing and expects additional products may be added to the recall list as more information becomes available. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed and check their meal kit packaging closely for any updates regarding the recall.

Conclusion

As the situation develops, it is crucial for consumers to remain vigilant about food safety, particularly regarding products that may be linked to listeria contamination. Those who experience flu-like symptoms after consuming the affected meals should seek medical attention and inform their healthcare provider about the potential exposure.
