ESA's Plato Space Telescope Nears Launch Readiness

The European Space Agency (ESA) has completed the assembly of the Plato spacecraft, a mission designed to discover Earth-like exoplanets. The final construction phase involved fitting the sunshield and solar panels, which are crucial for the spacecraft's operation. This milestone was achieved on September 9, 2025, at ESA's Test Centre in the Netherlands. Thomas Walloschek, ESA’s Plato Project Manager, expressed satisfaction with the completion, highlighting the collaborative effort among ESA, the Plato Mission Consortium, and the industrial core team.

Plato is equipped with 26 advanced cameras that will monitor over 150,000 bright stars simultaneously. These cameras are designed to detect minute variations in star brightness, which indicate the presence of orbiting planets. To maintain optimal performance, the cameras must be kept at approximately -80°C, necessitating the protective sunshield that blocks sunlight.

Testing and Validation

Following the assembly, engineers conducted deployment tests for the solar panels, simulating the weightlessness of space. The panels were successfully unfolded on September 16 and 22, 2025, using a pulley system to mimic the conditions they will experience in orbit. After deployment, the panels were illuminated with a lamp to simulate sunlight, confirming they generated the required electricity for the spacecraft.

Before its scheduled launch in December 2026 aboard an Ariane 6 rocket, Plato must undergo rigorous testing. This includes vibration and acoustic tests to replicate the stresses of a rocket launch, followed by exposure to the harsh conditions of space within the Large Space Simulator, Europe’s largest cryo-vacuum chamber.

Mission Objectives and Capabilities

Plato's primary mission is to search for terrestrial exoplanets within the habitable zones of Sun-like stars. The spacecraft's design allows it to have a wider field of view compared to previous missions, such as the Kepler telescope. With a total field of view of 2.11 gigapixels, Plato aims to provide unprecedented data on potential Earth-like planets.

The mission is expected to last four years, with a possible extension of an additional four years, focusing on the study of exoplanets and their characteristics.
