Introduction to the Initiative
Goa’s Rhea Distilleries has introduced India's first paper bottle, named the Frugal Bottle, for its Fidalgo Premium Cashew Feni spirit. This launch coincided with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s trade visit to India on October 9, 2025, aimed at strengthening trade relations between the UK and India. The initiative is a collaboration involving UK-based Frugalpac, ITC’s Packaging and Printing Business in India, and Rhea Distilleries. The Frugal Bottle is made from 94% recycled paperboard and features a food-grade liner, making it lighter and more environmentally friendly than traditional glass bottles.
Key Features of the Frugal Bottle
The Frugal Bottle is designed to be five times lighter than glass, with a carbon footprint up to six times lower. It is also recyclable, as the paper shell can be separated from the liner for disposal through existing waste streams. Rhea Distilleries has commissioned an initial production run of these bottles for its Fidalgo Premium Cashew Feni, which will be available in select markets in Goa. This move aligns with India's increasing commitment to reducing plastic and glass waste, supporting sustainable packaging practices.
Official Statements & Responses
Malcolm Waugh, CEO of Frugalpac, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “This is a pivotal moment for sustainable packaging in India.” He noted that the partnership not only introduces an eco-friendly bottle for a traditional Goan spirit but also sets the stage for broader changes in India’s drinks industry. Cherian Kenneth Thomas, CEO of ITC’s Packaging and Printing Business, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting its potential to bring more products to the Indian market in sustainable packaging. Regan Henriques, director of Rhea Distilleries, remarked on the cultural significance of Feni, stating, “By using the paper Frugal Bottle, Rhea Distilleries is blending tradition with innovation to appeal to a new generation of eco-conscious consumers.”
Criticism & Opposition
While the initiative has been largely welcomed, some critics argue that the transition to paper bottles may not fully address the environmental impact of the beverage industry. Concerns have been raised about the durability and practicality of paper bottles compared to glass, particularly in terms of preserving the quality of spirits during transport and storage.
Broader Implications
The introduction of the Frugal Bottle is part of a larger trend in the beverage industry towards sustainable packaging solutions. As consumers become increasingly concerned about environmental issues, brands are under pressure to adopt eco-friendly practices. The collaboration between Rhea Distilleries, Frugalpac, and ITC could inspire other companies in India’s burgeoning spirits market to explore similar sustainable alternatives.
What's Next
Following the initial launch, Rhea Distilleries and its partners plan to explore further opportunities for scaling up production and indigenizing the materials used in the Frugal Bottle. This initiative could pave the way for additional brands in India to transition from glass to paper packaging, contributing to a more sustainable future in the beverage industry.
