Renovation Progress at Salvation Army North Corp Community Center

The Salvation Army's North Corp Community Center in Omaha is undergoing significant renovations aimed at enhancing its capacity to serve the local community. The project is being executed in two phases, with phase one already completed and benefiting community members. The center, originally built 78 years ago, has expanded to a total of 42,000 square feet, tripling its size to better accommodate the needs of residents.

Phase one of the renovation has introduced several vital facilities, including a newly enlarged kitchen equipped with modern appliances, which has tripled in size. This kitchen is crucial for the center's food programs, serving nearly 200 meals daily to individuals in need. Jeff Beckman, the executive director of development, emphasized the importance of these food programs, stating, “We feed over the lunch hour, about 125 to 150 individuals every day in our food program.”

Additionally, a new collegiate-sized gym has been added, which will host tournaments and athletic events for local youth, replacing the previous cramped gym. Beckman noted that the new gym will provide many more opportunities for the North Omaha community.

Currently, phase two of the renovation is underway, which includes the addition of a mixed-use gym, classrooms, and personal hygiene areas, such as showers. This phase is expected to be completed by May 4, 2026. Beckman expressed optimism about the future of the center, stating, “We expect this to be full and vibrant in the future.”

The renovations are funded entirely through private philanthropy, reflecting the community's commitment to improving local resources. Longtime donor and volunteer Willy Theisen highlighted the significance of the center, saying, “When you get together, when you share food, you share thoughts, you share ideas, you share feelings, and you build trust with each other.”

While the renovations are largely viewed positively, some community members have raised concerns about the extent of the changes and whether they adequately address the most pressing needs of the community.
