Global Initiatives to Enhance Human Rights Knowledge
Recent efforts to bolster human rights education and advocacy have emerged through various initiatives worldwide. Notably, an innovative online course co-produced by the Global Campus of Human Rights aims to deepen understanding of human dignity, a fundamental concept in human rights law. Coordinated by Erin Daly from Delaware Law School and Catherine Dupré from the University of Exeter Law School, the course features interviews with distinguished judges, including Albie Sachs, Susanne Baer, and Veronica Gomez. Participants will explore how human dignity influences legal frameworks and human rights practices globally. The course is free and accessible until 2030, catering to individuals engaged in activism, law, or human rights advocacy.
Regional Efforts in the Former Yugoslavia
In the Western Balkans, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) has launched a project titled “Mapping Memories through the Path of Dialogue and the Stories of Victims.” This initiative focuses on the legacy of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and aims to educate participants about transitional justice and regional reconciliation. MIP researcher Nemanja Stjepanovic led workshops on navigating ICTY archives, emphasizing the importance of preserving judicial records to understand the conflicts of the 1990s. This project is funded by the European Union and executed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Training Programs in India
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has also been proactive in expanding human rights awareness through training programs. Recently, the NHRC conducted a three-day training of trainers program in Telangana, targeting police personnel and representatives from social welfare departments. The program covered various aspects of human rights, including constitutional provisions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Dr. Shashank Goel, Director General of Telangana, highlighted the collective responsibility to protect the rights of vulnerable groups during the valedictory session.
Additionally, the NHRC has initiated a two-week online short-term internship program for university students, aimed at equipping them with knowledge about human rights laws and advocacy strategies. This program, which included virtual tours of institutions like Tihar Jail, sought to foster sensitivity and understanding among participants regarding human rights issues in India.
Business Engagement in Human Rights
On the corporate front, RMG representatives participated in the 10th UN Global Compact European Business and Human Rights Peer Learning Meeting in London. This event focused on the European Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and aimed to enhance business engagement in human rights initiatives. RMG has been a member of the UN Global Compact since 2022 and is committed to aligning its operations with international human rights standards.
