The Kummer Vanguard Scholars at Missouri University of Science and Technology recently engaged with three successful entrepreneurs who shared their journeys and advice on entrepreneurship. Nick Akers, president and CEO of Inzo Technologies, emphasized resilience, stating, “Everyone will think you are crazy... but successful entrepreneurs ignore the noise and have an innate ability to not quit.” Akers, who invented a catalyst during his graduate studies, founded his company to provide IT and cybersecurity services.
Scott Volner, owner of Catalytic Innovations, highlighted the importance of versatility in entrepreneurship. He noted that aspiring entrepreneurs should be “a jack of all trades” and stressed the value of hard work, stating, “If you’re an entrepreneur, you need to be a jack of all trades.” Volner’s company specializes in micronutrient manufacturing and catalyst recycling, showcasing his commitment to innovation in the industry.
Dan Nobbe, vice president of radio frequency and radar systems at MatrixSpace, shared his experiences with multiple startups, including Peregrine Semiconductor. He underscored the necessity of belief in one’s vision, asserting, “You have to take a risk but you’ll regret it if you don’t take that chance.” Nobbe’s ventures have significantly impacted technology, particularly in telecommunications and satellite imaging.
The Lassonde Startup Academy: A New Opportunity for High School Entrepreneurs
Starting in summer 2026, the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute at the University of Utah will launch the Lassonde Startup Academy, aimed at high school students aged 14-18. This program will provide aspiring entrepreneurs with hands-on experience in product creation and business development while earning college credit. Scott Holley, executive director of the institute, stated, “We created a high school program like no other to attract the best up-and-coming entrepreneurs.”
Participants will reside at Lassonde Studios, a state-of-the-art living-learning center, where they will collaborate on projects and learn from experienced entrepreneurs. The program culminates in a demo day, allowing students to showcase their products. Scholarships will be available based on merit and need, with early registration encouraged due to limited space.
Recognizing Excellence in Entrepreneurship
Brian, co-founder of Bridgemans Services Group, was recently named EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2025 for the Pacific region. His company has redefined remote workforce accommodations, focusing on safety and sustainability. Bridgemans operates globally, with a commitment to environmental stewardship and community empowerment. Anita Chang, EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Pacific Program Director, praised Brian’s approach, stating, “He’s setting new standards for safety and sustainability in industrial housing.”
Brian will compete for the national title on November 26, 2025, in Toronto, and subsequently for the global title in Monaco in May 2026.
