Launch of the WGC Wellness Club
On October 17, 2023, the Wangkhao Government College (WGC) in Mon officially launched the ‘WGC Wellness Club’ in collaboration with the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP). This initiative coincided with World Mental Health Day and aims to foster partnerships between health institutions and educational establishments to promote mental health awareness within the college and the broader community. The DMHP plans to conduct a series of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities from October 10 to November 10, 2025, focusing on mental health promotion, early identification and treatment, and improving access to mental health services across the district.
Dr. Tialila, Principal of WGC, expressed gratitude for the partnership, emphasizing the importance of maintaining emotional and physical well-being during college life. Dr. Wungyong Konyak, DPO (RCH & UIP), highlighted the need for consistent health awareness efforts, particularly regarding mental health, which he described as one of the most neglected aspects of overall well-being. K Loungnyem Konyak, a Psychiatric Social Worker, noted a positive shift in public attitudes towards mental health initiatives, although he acknowledged that stigma and cultural barriers still exist.
Objectives and Community Engagement
The WGC Wellness Club aims to create a supportive environment for students and faculty, inviting them to participate in collective efforts to enhance mental health. Loungnyem outlined the club’s vision and mission, encouraging involvement from the college community. The program was chaired by H David Konyak, Assistant Professor, and concluded with a vote of thanks from Linokali Sumi, Clinical Psychologist.
Broader Community Wellness Initiatives
In addition to the WGC Wellness Club, various community-led initiatives across regions like Solihull and Newark and Sherwood are redefining local wellness. In Solihull, grassroots initiatives such as affordable exercise classes and mental health walking groups are fostering community connections and promoting well-being. The Solihull Striders & Strollers Wellbeing Walks and Men Walking & Talking groups exemplify how local efforts are making physical activity accessible and socially engaging.
Newark and Sherwood District Council is also committed to enhancing health and well-being through community-led programs. Initiatives like free fun swims, disability-inclusive sports sessions, and food education courses aim to improve access to services and promote healthy lifestyles. The Barbers Initiative, which addresses sensitive health topics in trusted environments, further illustrates the innovative approaches being taken to break down stigma and encourage open conversations about health.
Official Statements & Responses
Officials from both the WGC and local councils have emphasized the importance of community engagement in promoting mental health and well-being. Dr. Tialila remarked on the necessity of emotional and physical health during college years, while Susan Crosby, Newark and Sherwood District Councillor, highlighted the success of inclusive programs in increasing leisure centre visits and fostering community connections.
Criticism & Opposition
Despite the positive developments, challenges remain. Stigma surrounding mental health persists in various communities, and some initiatives may struggle to reach those most in need. Critics argue that while awareness is increasing, tangible access to mental health services still requires significant improvement.
