The Shift to Alternative Power Sources

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to drive unprecedented demand for computing power, data centers in the United States are increasingly turning to innovative power solutions to address energy constraints. Faced with multi-year delays in securing grid power, operators are deploying aeroderivative gas turbines—retired commercial aircraft engines repurposed for energy generation. These turbines, such as General Electric’s CF6-80C2 and LM6000, are being utilized in facilities like OpenAI's near Abilene, Texas, where nearly 30 LM2500XPRESS units are being installed to support AI infrastructure.

Bridging Power Solutions

The use of these gas turbines represents a stopgap measure, as traditional utility-scale infrastructure struggles to keep pace with the burgeoning energy needs of AI. Each turbine can deliver up to 34 megawatts, enabling rapid deployment and quick ramp-up times to meet fluctuating energy demands. However, this approach is not without drawbacks, as these turbines operate with lower thermal efficiency compared to combined-cycle plants and primarily rely on diesel or gas.

In parallel, Aligned Data Centers has partnered with Calibrant Energy to deploy a 31 MW / 62 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Pacific Northwest campus. This system is designed to come online in 2026, allowing the facility to scale operations years earlier than traditional utility upgrades would permit. Companies like Liberty Energy and Halliburton are expanding their power generation capacities, with Liberty increasing its planned output from 400 megawatts to over 1 gigawatt by 2027. This shift is driven by the need to electrify operations and meet the growing energy demands of AI.

Moreover, INNIO Group has secured a landmark order to deliver 2.3 gigawatts of power infrastructure to support a major U.S. data center project, highlighting the increasing reliance on robust and flexible energy solutions. The partnership with VoltaGrid aims to integrate INNIO's power generation units with portable data center power platforms, ensuring reliable energy supply even under challenging conditions.

Despite the optimism surrounding these developments, there are concerns regarding the long-term sustainability and environmental impact of these power solutions. Critics argue that reliance on gas turbines and other fossil fuel-based technologies may not align with broader goals of reducing carbon emissions.
