Rise of TikTok Job Scams: A Growing Concern

Fraudsters are increasingly posing as TikTok employees to deceive individuals into providing personal information and bank details under the guise of offering lucrative job opportunities. An investigation by the Manchester Evening News revealed that these scams typically involve unsolicited text messages promising high earnings for simple online tasks. Victims are often lured with claims of earning between £300 and £1,000 per day, with a guaranteed monthly salary of up to £10,000.

The scammers send mass text messages, often claiming to be from "TikTok HR," and invite recipients to apply for flexible part-time roles. Once a potential victim engages, they are directed to communicate via encrypted messaging platforms like Telegram. Here, they are given a "job code" and asked for sensitive information, including bank details, under various pretexts. For instance, one message stated, "Our daily work is to like videos," while another promised a commission for participation.

According to Action Fraud, there were 251 reported TikTok-related scams in August 2023, with 112 categorized as job or recruitment fraud. The Greater Manchester Police noted a significant increase in reports of such scams, with victims losing amounts as high as £1,000. Lloyds Bank reported a staggering 237% rise in advanced fee job scams in 2025, with victims losing an average of £1,420.

TikTok has publicly warned users about these scams, stating, "Please be informed that such messages are scams. TikTok and its partners do not operate in this manner." The company urges individuals to be vigilant and to verify the legitimacy of job offers before sharing personal information. Detective Sergeant Stacey Shannon from Greater Manchester Police's Economic Crime Unit emphasized the deceptive nature of these schemes, noting that they can target anyone, not just those actively seeking employment.

Despite the warnings, many individuals continue to fall victim to these scams. Critics argue that social media platforms like TikTok need to enhance their security measures to protect users from such fraudulent activities. The prevalence of these scams raises concerns about the effectiveness of current measures in place to safeguard users.

As the number of scams continues to rise, authorities are urging victims to report any suspicious activity to Action Fraud and to cease communication with the scammers.
