Slovenia's Success in the Billie Jean King Cup: Juvan and Zidansek Shine

Kaja Juvan and Tamara Zidansek led Slovenia to a successful campaign in the Billie Jean King Cup Group ‘G’ play-offs held at the S.M. Krishna Tennis Stadium. Their performance was instrumental in securing Slovenia's place in the Qualifiers round. The pivotal match against the Netherlands set the tone for Slovenia's success, as they faced a team that included the highest-ranked player in the group, Suzan Lamens (World No. 87), and experienced competitor Arantxa Rus (World No. 139). However, Juvan (World No. 98) and Zidansek (World No. 162) turned expectations on their head. Zidansek started strong, defeating Rus 6-1, 7-6(6), while Juvan overcame Lamens in a closely contested match. Following this victory, Slovenia easily defeated host nation India, with Zidansek and Juvan winning their respective matches.

Zidansek, who reached the semifinals of the 2021 French Open, experienced a setback due to a severe COVID-19 infection that hampered her recovery for several months. She noted, “I played my best tennis at the beginning of 2022... But then COVID happened. I had a really bad post-COVID recovery which took six to eight months.” Now fully fit, Zidansek is also pursuing a bachelor's degree in psychology, which she finds fulfilling during her downtime.

Juvan's journey has been marked by the loss of her father, Robert, to cancer, which deeply affected her. She expressed, “My world fell apart for a little bit... It was quite hard for me to grieve and compete at the same time.” After taking time off to process her grief, Juvan has begun to rediscover her love for tennis and is focused on improving her ranking, stating, “It is great that I’m in the top 100, but I think that my goals are even higher.”

Juvan's friendship with World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has also played a role in her career. They trained together in their youth and won the girls’ doubles gold at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. Juvan remarked on Swiatek's grounded nature despite her success, emphasizing that their friendship remains intact even after competitive matches, such as their recent encounter at the 2023 US Open.
