South Africa's Controversial Reception of Palestinian Refugees from Gaza

In November 2023, a group of over 150 Palestinians arrived in South Africa under controversial circumstances, raising significant concerns among activists and government officials. The evacuees were reportedly transported from Gaza to South Africa via a chartered flight that passed through Nairobi, without prior coordination or documentation. Families reportedly paid between $1,500 and $5,000 per person for the journey, believing they were securing safe passage from Gaza. Khalid Vawda, an activist, characterized the operation as a form of human trafficking, stating, “It is clear to us that Al-Majd is a front for the Israeli state and the Israeli intelligence.”

Upon their arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, the group was initially denied entry due to missing departure stamps in their passports. After prolonged negotiations and intervention from local charities, they were eventually allowed to disembark. Ramaphosa emphasized the need for compassion, stating, “Even though they do not have the necessary documents and papers, these are people from a strife-torn, a war-torn country.” The South African government has since committed to investigating the circumstances surrounding the evacuation and the role of Al-Majd Europe.

Critics have expressed outrage over the handling of the situation, arguing that the South African government failed to adequately support the refugees upon their arrival. Activists are demanding a thorough investigation into both the organization that facilitated the evacuation and the government's response. Oosthuizen, an activist, stated, “Our government has taken a pro-Palestinian stance... this is very embarrassing; the way that these people in dire need were treated.”

The Israeli military body COGAT stated that the residents left Gaza after receiving approval from a third country, which has not been specified. Meanwhile, the Palestinian embassy in South Africa condemned the actions of Al-Majd Europe, labeling it an unregistered and misleading organization that exploited the humanitarian crisis.
