As of November 17, 2025, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) reported a significant increase in global internet usage, with approximately 6 billion people—about three-quarters of the world's population—now online. This marks an increase of over 240 million users from 2024, where the revised estimate was 5.8 billion. Despite this growth, 2.2 billion individuals remain offline, primarily in low- and middle-income countries, highlighting ongoing disparities in digital access.

The ITU's "Facts and Figures 2025" report reveals stark contrasts in internet access based on economic status, gender, and geography. In high-income countries, 94% of the population uses the internet, compared to only 23% in low-income countries. Notably, 96% of those without internet access reside in low- and middle-income nations. Gender disparities also persist, with 77% of men online versus 71% of women. Urban areas show significantly higher connectivity, with 85% online compared to just 58% in rural regions.

While the median price of mobile broadband has decreased, access remains unaffordable for around 60% of low- and middle-income countries. The report emphasizes that achieving meaningful connectivity—defined as high-quality internet access at an affordable cost—is crucial.
