BAE Systems, Boeing, and Saab Collaborate on T-7A Red Hawk for RAF Training Needs

Joint Bid for Advanced Jet Trainer
BAE Systems, Boeing, and Saab have entered into a Letter of Intent to jointly propose the T-7A Red Hawk as the next advanced jet trainer for the Royal Air Force (RAF). This collaboration aims to fulfill the RAF's requirement for a new Advanced Jet Trainer as outlined in the 2025 Strategic Defence Review. The T-7A, which has been selected by the US Air Force as its next-generation pilot-training aircraft, will serve as the core of a new integrated training system that combines live and synthetic training environments.
Under this agreement, BAE Systems will lead the initiative, which includes establishing a UK-based final assembly line for the T-7A. This move is anticipated to enhance domestic supply-chain participation and create skilled jobs within the UK. Simon Barnes, managing director of BAE Systems’ Air sector, emphasized that the consortium aims to provide a compelling offer to the RAF and global customers, enhancing combat-air readiness while delivering economic benefits.
Technological Integration and Future Prospects
The proposed training system will leverage the T-7A's modular mission systems to prepare RAF pilots for modern combat aircraft, including fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-generation fighters. Boeing's Bernd Peters noted that this collaboration strengthens the transatlantic industrial base and positions the companies to support future international pilot training opportunities.
The T-7A Red Hawk's digital design and integrated training capabilities are intended to meet evolving training requirements. The RAF is currently looking to replace its fleet of Hawk T2 aircraft and the older Hawk T1 jets used by the Red Arrows aerobatic display team. The UK Ministry of Defence has acknowledged the need for this replacement, with a formal competition for the acquisition expected to launch in 2026.
Competition in the Advanced Trainer Market
The T-7A will face competition from other advanced trainer aircraft, including the Leonardo M-346, Lockheed Martin/Korea Aerospace Industries T-50, and Turkish Aerospace Hürjet. Additionally, UK start-up Aeralis is promoting a modular trainer solution. The competition is set against the backdrop of the UK’s requirement to replace the aging Hawk T1 aircraft, which date back to the late 1970s and must be replaced by 2030 to maintain operational capability.

While the collaboration has been largely welcomed, some industry observers have raised concerns about the potential for monopolistic practices in the advanced trainer market. Critics argue that reliance on a single consortium could limit competition and innovation in pilot training solutions.
