Israel's Controversial Role in Palestinian Emigration from Gaza

Al-Majd Europe, a shadowy organization claiming to facilitate humanitarian evacuations from Gaza, has come under scrutiny for its operations. Founded in Germany in 2010, it now operates from Jerusalem, yet lacks registration in German records. Investigations reveal that Al-Majd's website features images from various crises, falsely attributing them to its own efforts. Despite claiming to assist the needy, it has reportedly received minimal cryptocurrency donations, raising questions about its legitimacy. Recent reports link Al-Majd to Tomer Jamar Lind, an individual with dual Israeli-Estonian citizenship, further fueling speculation about its connections to the Israeli government.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense has not responded to inquiries regarding Al-Majd's affiliations. The establishment of a "directorate of voluntary emigration" within the Ministry of Defense has raised alarms among rights groups, who argue that the majority of Gaza's 2.2 million residents have historically faced significant barriers to leaving the territory. Before the escalation of conflict in October 2023, exit permits were difficult to obtain, and the current blockade has intensified these restrictions.

Omar, a representative from Al-Majd, asserts that the organization is not facilitating emigration but rather assisting those who wish to escape dire conditions in Gaza. He claims that cooperation with Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) is necessary for transporting individuals to the airport. However, he refrained from addressing questions about Al-Majd's financial practices and connections to Lind, leaving the organization's true nature ambiguous.

Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the situation in Gaza has deteriorated, making it increasingly challenging for residents to leave. Despite claims of improved conditions for emigration, only three confirmed groups have successfully departed since the announcement of the voluntary emigration directorate. The World Health Organization has facilitated thousands of medical evacuations this year, but overall emigration remains a sensitive and contentious issue.

Human rights advocates, including Omar Shakir from Human Rights Watch and Tania Hary from Gisha, argue that the Israeli government's actions reflect a pattern of forced transfer disguised as voluntary departure. They emphasize that under international law, the right to leave one's country must be free from coercion. Hary contends that the unlivable conditions in Gaza, coupled with the promotion of emigration, indicate a deliberate strategy to render the area uninhabitable.
