Pornhub Advocates for Device-Based Age Verification to Protect Minors

In a recent initiative, Pornhub's parent company, Aylo, has reached out to major technology firms, including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, urging them to implement device-based age verification systems across their app stores and operating systems. This appeal comes in response to the increasing number of age verification laws being enacted in the United States and the United Kingdom, which mandate that users provide identification to access adult content online.

Anthony Penhale, chief legal officer for Aylo, articulated the company's stance in letters sent to these tech giants, stating that existing site-based age verification methods have proven ineffective in safeguarding minors from accessing inappropriate material. He emphasized that these methods have "failed to achieve their primary objective." Instead, Aylo advocates for a device-based approach, where age verification occurs at the device level—such as smartphones or tablets—allowing age signals to be shared with adult sites through an application programming interface (API).
