The Struggle for Power: Ukrainians Endure Blackouts Amid Russian Assault

Ukrainians are facing severe challenges as Russia intensifies its campaign against the country's power network. This assault, characterized by drone strikes targeting thermal power plants and substations, has plunged many regions into darkness, particularly in Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv. Valentyna Ivanivna, a resident of Chernihiv, described the daily struggle of living without electricity, stating, “We are without power for 14 hours a day.” The situation has become increasingly dire as winter approaches, with blackouts affecting not only remote areas but also major cities like Kyiv.

Residents have adapted to life without consistent electricity by utilizing "invincibility points," which are warm tents offering power sockets and internet access. Liudmyla Mykolayivna, a 68-year-old pensioner, shared her experience of using her phone at these locations while relying on a torch at home. Adam Davidenko, a courier, expressed his frustration, stating, “Russia is a terrorist country. They can’t defeat us militarily, so they decided to kill us with cold.” The regional power company, Chernihivoblenergo, has faced significant challenges in maintaining the electricity supply, with drone attacks damaging critical infrastructure.

The healthcare system in Chernihiv is also suffering due to power outages. Vladyslav Kukhar, director of Hospital No. 2, noted that non-urgent operations are frequently canceled because of the lack of electricity. He emphasized the emotional toll this situation takes on healthcare workers and patients alike. Public anger has surged amid a corruption scandal involving high-ranking officials, further complicating the community's response to the ongoing crisis. Local journalist Andriy Podverbnyi remarked on the disappointment felt by residents, stating, “For the guys on the frontline and for those living with no or little power, it’s like a knife in the back.”

Families with children are particularly affected by the blackouts. Anna Kulieva expressed concern for her daughter Yeseniia's education, stating, “You can’t bathe your child. Or clean your apartment.” The absence of electricity disrupts not only daily routines but also the quality of education children receive. Despite these hardships, Kulieva highlighted the resilience of her community, saying, “People here are amazing. There’s incredible unity.”

Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have acknowledged the challenges posed by the ongoing attacks on infrastructure. The government is working to bolster defenses against drone strikes while addressing the public's concerns regarding corruption and resource allocation.
