Matchbox Shots to Adapt Sarbjit Kaur Athwal’s Memoir in Upcoming Film "Shamed"

Matchbox Shots, a Mumbai-based production company known for films like “Andhadhun” and “Monica O My Darling,” is developing “Shamed,” an adaptation of Sarbjit Kaur Athwal’s memoir. The film recounts the harrowing true story of a British-Punjabi woman who bravely testified against her family for conspiring to murder her sister-in-law, resulting in the United Kingdom's first bodiless murder conviction. The project aims to shed light on domestic violence within South Asian communities while serving as a platform for advocacy.

Producer Sarita Patil emphasizes the urgency of the narrative, stating that it reveals the hidden violence often present in seemingly happy families. She describes the story as one of betrayal and courage, highlighting the protagonist's resilience against overwhelming odds. Director-writer Dikssha Routray, who has a history of working with Matchbox Shots, will lead the film's adaptation. Routray has previously contributed to notable projects and is recognized for her creative direction in both films and short films.

“Shamed” is currently in the final stages of script refinement, with production slated to begin in 2027. Matchbox Shots has secured approximately 25% of the film's budget and is actively pursuing international co-producers through the WAVES Film Bazaar Co-Production Market, which is part of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa. Patil outlines a strategic approach to financing, utilizing co-production markets, private equity, and domestic and international rebates to establish a robust financial foundation for the project.
