2026 Met Gala Theme Announced: "Costume Art"

The Met Gala has officially announced its theme for 2026, which will focus on “Costume Art.” This revelation was made during a press briefing on November 17, 2023, by Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, alongside Anna Wintour. The event is scheduled for May 4, 2026, adhering to the tradition of taking place on the first Monday in May.

The theme coincides with the opening of the new 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This expansion will feature an exhibition that explores the relationship between clothing and the human form, showcasing garments alongside various artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and photographs. Bolton has organized the exhibition into three sections: bodies commonly seen in art, bodies historically overlooked, and the anatomical body. The use of mirrored mannequins and cast figures is intended to encourage visitors to reflect on the lived experiences of the bodies represented.

The Met Gala will commence with the carpet opening at 4:30 p.m. ET, followed by live coverage starting at 6 p.m. ET, available on Vogue's website and social media channels. While the co-hosts for the gala have yet to be announced, Saint Laurent has been confirmed as the lead fashion sponsor. This sponsorship highlights the brand's ambassadors, including Zoë Kravitz, Hailey Bieber, Austin Butler, and Rosé of Blackpink, who are anticipated to attend and may be considered for co-chair positions.

As of now, two attendees have been confirmed: Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, who will return as supporters of the Costume Institute’s exhibition and the gala. Their participation guarantees them seats on the carpet.

While the official dress code remains undisclosed, hints from the Costume Institute suggest it may revolve around the theme of interpreting the body as art. Attendees might draw inspiration from designers such as Charles James and Renata Buzzo, as well as historical artists like Albrecht Dürer.
