Massachusetts Senate Primary: Markey Faces Moulton and Potential Challenge from Pressley

A recent Suffolk University/Boston Globe poll indicates that U.S. Senator Ed Markey holds a significant lead over U.S. Representative Seth Moulton in the upcoming Democratic primary for the Massachusetts Senate seat. The poll shows that 45 percent of likely primary voters support Markey, while 22 percent favor Moulton. However, the dynamics shift if U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley enters the race, with a hypothetical three-way primary showing Pressley at 35 percent, Markey at 34 percent, and Moulton at 16 percent. Notably, nearly 31 percent of voters remain undecided.

The poll reveals mixed feelings about Markey's reelection prospects, with only 42 percent of all surveyed voters believing he deserves another term. Approximately 50 percent of voters view him favorably, compared to 37 percent for Moulton and 35 percent for Pressley. Economic concerns are prevalent among voters, with 37 percent citing inflation and the cost of living as their primary issues. Just one in five voters believe the economy is in good or excellent shape, a significant decline from the previous year.

Moulton has positioned his campaign around the theme of generational change, emphasizing Markey's long tenure in Congress, which began 49 years ago. Some voters express concerns about Markey's age, with 38 percent supporting a ban on political candidates after reaching a certain age. However, others, like Matt Baun from Ashland, question the fairness of age-related biases in politics. Supporters of Moulton argue for a fresh approach, with some voters expressing a desire for change from established politicians.

Governor Maura Healey, who is also seeking reelection, faces a challenging landscape, with only 46 percent of voters believing she deserves another term. Her favorability rating stands at 49 percent, lower than that of Markey and other prominent Democrats. The poll highlights a significant gender gap in support for Healey, with nearly 60 percent of women favoring her reelection compared to just 33 percent of men.
