Fujitsu Advances Blue Carbon Certification with Ocean Digital Twin Technology

On November 26, 2025, Fujitsu announced the development of a groundbreaking technology designed to quantify blue carbon, which refers to carbon absorbed and stored by marine and coastal ecosystems, particularly from seaweed and seagrass. This innovation is part of Fujitsu's broader initiative involving ocean digital twin technology, aimed at accelerating the certification process for blue carbon credits, a critical component in global decarbonization efforts and marine environmental preservation.

Key Features of the Technology

Fujitsu's new system enables rapid and accurate data collection and measurement of blue carbon, achieving over 85% accuracy in recognizing ecosystems and quantifying carbon in areas exceeding one hectare. The technology significantly reduces the time required for assessments to approximately 30 minutes per hectare, a drastic improvement from previous methods. The system has been validated through the attainment of J-Blue Credit® certification, achieving a distinguished 95% accreditation rate.

The technology encompasses three core elements:

1. Autonomous Underwater Drone Navigation: This feature allows drones to collect subsea data efficiently, even in challenging conditions, maintaining a position accuracy within ±50 cm.

2. Seagrass Bed Quantification: Utilizing AI, this technology accurately identifies species and density of seagrass and seaweed, enabling precise calculations of blue carbon absorption.

3. Seagrass Bed Creation Simulation: This component predicts the impacts of human interventions on seagrass growth, allowing for pre-verification of restoration measures.

Collaborative Efforts and Applications

Fujitsu has partnered with the Uwakai Institute for Environmental Biology, the Yoshida Branch of the Ehime Prefectural Fisheries Cooperative Association, and Uwajima City to quantify blue carbon in the Uwa Sea. Following their efforts, an application for blue carbon credit certification was submitted to the Japan Blue Economy Technology Research Association, resulting in J-Blue Credit® certification for an area of 1.8 hectares.

The company plans to showcase its ocean digital twin initiatives at the Techno-Ocean 2025 event in Kobe, Japan, from November 27 to November 29, 2025. Fujitsu aims to expand the application of its technology to include inspections of marine facilities and environmental surveys related to marine construction.
