Poland Detains Suspects in Alleged Espionage Activities Linked to Russia

Poland's National Prosecutor's Office has announced the detention of five individuals, including two Ukrainians and three Belarusians, on charges of espionage for a foreign intelligence service. The arrests occurred on November 25-26, 2025, as part of a coordinated operation by the Internal Security Agency and police units. The suspects are accused of gathering intelligence against the Polish state throughout 2024 and early 2025.

The detained individuals include Ukrainian nationals Oleksandr S. and a minor, Sofia Ch., along with Belarusian citizens Viktoryia M., Anton M., and Uladzimir U. Prosecutors allege that the group engaged in activities such as photographing critical infrastructure and transmitting these images, which are vital to national security. Additionally, they reportedly established contact with foreign intelligence representatives via Telegram and were compensated for their tasks in cryptocurrencies. The activities also included creating and disseminating posters and graffiti linked to foreign operations.

Under Polish law, espionage carries severe penalties, with potential sentences ranging from five to 30 years in prison. Three of the suspects—Viktoryia M., Oleksandr S., and Anton M.—have been remanded in custody for three months. Sofia Ch. has been placed in a juvenile shelter for the same duration, while Uladzimir U. has been subjected to a travel ban due to health issues rather than arrest.

Poland has characterized these espionage activities as part of a "hybrid war" waged by Russia, which it claims aims to undermine support for Ukraine. The Polish government has reported incidents of arson and cyberattacks attributed to Russian operatives, although Moscow has denied these allegations. The broader investigation into espionage activities is ongoing, with authorities examining similar incidents across various Polish cities, including Rzeszów, Warszawa, and Lódz, from March 2024 to February 2025.
