Hanwha Aerospace has entered into a significant contract valued at KRW 705 billion (approximately USD 482 million) with South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) for the mass production of the Long-range Surface-to-Air Missile (L-SAM) system. This contract is pivotal for enhancing South Korea's layered air and missile defense capabilities, with deliveries expected to be completed by 2030. The L-SAM system is designed to provide a high-altitude interception layer, allowing the Korean military to engage enemy ballistic missiles before existing systems, such as the Medium-range Surface-to-Air Missile (M-SAM) and the Patriot missile systems, are activated.

The L-SAM incorporates advanced technologies, including a Divert and Attitude Control System (DACS) and a dual-pulse propulsion system, marking it as the first long-range missile defense system developed in Korea to utilize these innovations. These technologies enable accurate interception of ballistic missiles at altitudes exceeding 40 kilometers, where conventional aerodynamic controls are ineffective due to thin air. The system's enhanced reliability and performance are expected to significantly bolster South Korea's defense posture against evolving ballistic and aerial threats.

In conjunction with the L-SAM contract, Hanwha Systems recently secured a KRW 357.3 billion contract for the production of the L-SAM Multi-Function Radar (MFR), which serves as the primary sensor for the L-SAM system. The MFR is responsible for detecting and tracking incoming ballistic missiles and hostile aircraft over long distances. Furthermore, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), along with Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems, is developing the L-SAM-II system, which aims to expand the engagement capabilities of the current system by three to four times, thereby enhancing national deterrence.
