Egypt Initiates Training Program for Future Gaza Police Force

A 26-year-old trainee expressed optimism about the program, stating, “We aspire to a definitive end to the fighting and hope to serve our homeland and fellow citizens.” The curriculum emphasizes the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and aims to reinforce the goal of establishing an independent Palestinian state.

A senior official from the Palestinian Authority confirmed that President Mahmoud Abbas directed Interior Minister Ziad Hab al-Reeh to collaborate with Egypt in forming these security units. The initiative is part of broader reconciliation efforts among Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Fatah, which agreed under Egyptian mediation to create a police force of approximately 10,000 officers. This force will consist of half trained by Egypt and half drawn from Gaza’s existing police ranks, which have been under Hamas control since 2007.
