League of Legends Ranked System Overhaul for 2026

Major Changes to Autofill and Matchmaking
Riot Games has announced significant updates to the Ranked system in League of Legends for the 2026 season, aiming to address longstanding issues such as autofill frustrations, dodging penalties, and queue times. The new system will prioritize matching autofilled players against others in the same role, or at least ensure an equal number of autofilled players on both teams. If neither condition is met, the team with more autofilled players will be paired with slightly higher MMR teammates. This change is intended to mitigate the negative impact of autofill, particularly for roles like jungle and support, which are often overrepresented in autofill scenarios.
To further enhance the experience for autofilled players, Riot is introducing the Aegis of Valor system. Players who achieve a mastery score of C or higher in an autofilled match will either receive double LP for a win or full protection from LP loss in the event of a defeat. This initiative aims to encourage players to engage fully in matches, even when assigned to roles they are less comfortable with.
Stricter Dodging Rules
In an effort to reduce the disruptive effects of dodging, the new rules state that dodging will no longer reset a player's autofill status. Additionally, for players at Master rank and above, a dodge will count as a full loss, along with the standard cooldown penalty. These changes are designed to discourage repeated dodging behavior, which can lead to longer wait times and a negative experience for all players involved.
Streamlined Queue Times and Champ Select
Riot is also focusing on improving the overall speed of the matchmaking process. Changes include reducing the time spent in champion select by approximately 30 seconds and removing the ability to ban champions that allies have hovered. This aims to create a more efficient and less frustrating pre-game experience. The developers anticipate that these adjustments will lead to a significant reduction in queue times, estimated at 40 to 50 percent depending on the region.
Recalibration of Rank Distribution
Recognizing that player skill has evolved over the years, Riot will recalibrate the lower tiers of the Ranked ladder to better reflect the current skill levels of players. This adjustment is not intended to inflate ranks but to align them more accurately with players' abilities. A new Climb Indicator will also be introduced, which will inform players when their visible rank does not match their actual MMR, helping to clarify situations where mismatched ranks occur in lobbies.
Role Quests and Gameplay Changes
The 2026 season will introduce Role Quests, which provide unique rewards for players based on their selected roles. Top laners will receive an upgraded Teleport and increased experience, mid laners will gain free Tier 3 boots and a faster recall, while bot laners will benefit from a seventh item slot and increased gold. Junglers will see enhancements to their Smite ability and additional rewards for completing jungle objectives. Supports will receive discounts on control wards and increased passive gold generation.
Conclusion and Future Monitoring
These comprehensive changes are set to go live in January 2026, with Riot Games committed to monitoring player feedback and queue health closely. The goal of these updates is to create a Ranked experience that is fairer, faster, and more enjoyable for all players, ultimately enhancing the competitive integrity of League of Legends.
