Biden Honored at LGBTQ+ Victory Institute Conference Amid Political Challenges

Former President Joe Biden is set to receive the Chris Abele Impact Award at the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute’s 41st International LGBTQ+ Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. This event, which runs from Thursday to Saturday, is recognized as a significant gathering for LGBTQ+ political leaders and advocates. The award is seen as a culmination of Biden's efforts during his presidency, which many LGBTQ+ advocates regard as the most inclusive administration in U.S. history. His administration appointed a record number of LGBTQ+ officials, reinstated and expanded federal protections, and restored transgender military service.

Low reported a significant increase in demand for candidate training programs, with some programs seeing two to three times their usual applications. Notably, the first training program exclusively for transgender candidates received nearly five times the number of applications available. This surge indicates a shift in perception, as many now view LGBTQ+ candidates as assets rather than liabilities in the political landscape.

In response, the Victory Institute has expanded its support services to include mental health resources for candidates facing these challenges. As of now, at least 80 out LGBTQ+ candidates have filed to run for federal office in the 2026 cycle, a historic figure that is expected to rise.
