Cleveland Guardians Pitchers Face Trial Over Allegations of Bribery and Fraud

U.S. District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto has scheduled jury selection for May 4, 2024, in Brooklyn federal court for Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz. The trial is expected to commence the following week and could last approximately two weeks, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Sherman. The allegations against Clase and Ortiz stem from accusations that they accepted bribes totaling thousands of dollars from two unnamed gamblers in the Dominican Republic. Prosecutors claim these payments were made to assist the gamblers in winning at least $460,000 on bets related to the speed and outcomes of the pitchers' performances. The investigation began after Major League Baseball (MLB) noted unusually high in-game betting activity during games in which the two pitchers participated.

• Emmanuel Clase: A 27-year-old pitcher for the Cleveland Guardians, Clase is a three-time All-Star and has been recognized as the American League Reliever of the Year twice. He is currently in the fourth season of a five-year contract worth $20 million.
